Kristin Cafferty Creativity Academy β€” Where Young Artists Learn to Think, Imagine & Create

About Kristin

Meet Kristin Cafferty

Artist. Educator. Creative thinker. And a firm believer that kids don't need us to tell them what to create β€” they need us to give them the confidence to figure it out.

Hi, I'm Kristin Cafferty β€” an artist, retired public school art teacher, and the founder of Kristin Cafferty Creative Academy.

For 30 years, I had the incredible privilege of teaching art at East Haven Academy in Connecticut. Over the course of my career, I taught students from kindergarten through high school and was honored to be named Middle School Teacher of the Year.

But the most important things I learned during those years didn't come from an art education textbook.

They came from watching kids create.

I watched what happened when a child was given permission to make their own choices. I saw the confidence that grew when a student figured something out without an adult stepping in to fix it. I learned that the child who asks, β€œIs this good?” often isn't looking for art advice at all β€” they're looking for reassurance that they can trust their own ideas.

And I became fascinated by everything that happens underneath the artwork.

Decision-making. Problem-solving. Perseverance. Curiosity. Risk-taking. Independence. Confidence.

Those are the things I came to care about most as an art teacher.

More About Us

From the Classroom to the Studio

Teaching has always been a huge part of who I am β€” but I'm also a working artist.

My own creative work has taken many forms over the years, but I fell especially in love with alcohol ink and its beautiful unpredictability. Unlike materials that can be carefully controlled, alcohol ink moves, blends, surprises you, and sometimes completely ignores whatever plan you thought you had.

Which, as it turns out, is a pretty wonderful metaphor for creativity.

My work has grown to include original alcohol ink artwork, commissions, large-scale pieces, murals, public art projects, and collaborations with libraries and community spaces throughout Connecticut.

And even after retiring from public education, I never really stopped teaching. I continued working with young artists through library programs, workshops, camps, and community art experiences. Being back around children creating reminded me of something I couldn't ignore:

I wasn't finished teaching.
I just wanted to do it differently.
Why I Created KCCA

Why I Created KCCA

I didn't want another classroom with bells, schedules, grades, or 25 kids trying to finish something before the period ended. I wanted to take the very best parts of my 30 years in the art room and build something new around them.

That's howΒ Kristin Cafferty Creative Academy β€” KCCA β€”Β began.

KCCA isn't about teaching children to reproduce my artwork. It's about teaching them what they can do with their own ideas.Β We learn real art skills. We explore artists and materials. We draw, paint, experiment, wonder, make mistakes, change our minds, solve problems, and sometimes make a glorious mess.

But I don't want 20 identical pieces of artwork at the end.Β I want 20 different answers.

Because when a child decides, β€œI'm going to try this,” something much bigger than an art project is happening.Β They're practicing trusting themselves.

Creativity Is Bigger Than Art

One of the biggest lessons my students taught me is that creativity isn't reserved for the kids who can draw beautifully.

Creativity is a way of thinking.
✦It's wondering What if?
✦It's trying something when you don't know exactly how it will turn out.
✦It's finding another solution when the first one doesn't work.
✦It's being willing to have an idea that's different from everyone else's.

And in a world where technology can give our children answers almost instantly, I believe their ability to ask questions, generate ideas, think differently, and trust their own thinking is becoming more important, not less.

That's why KCCA is about so much more than making beautiful artwork. My goal is to help children build a creative toolbox they can carry far beyond the art room.

βœ”I want them to know that their ideas have value.
βœ”I want them to become comfortable experimenting.
βœ”I want them to understand that mistakes don't mean they're bad at something.
βœ”I want them to stop looking at the adult in the room and asking, β€œWhat should I do?”
And start thinking: β€œI have an idea.”

After 30 years of teaching, that is still one of my favorite things to hear. And it's exactly why I created KCCA.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What ages is KCCA for?
KCCA is designed for children approximately ages 6–12 who enjoy creating β€” or who need a little help believing that they can create. Projects are designed with enough artistic instruction to build real skills while leaving enough freedom for children to make independent choices.
Does my child need art experience?
No previous art experience is necessary. Every month includes real artistic instruction β€” drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, composition, color, line, texture and more β€” while leaving plenty of room for each child to make their own choices.
What supplies do we need?
At the beginning of each month, families receive a simple supply list. Most materials are common art supplies many families already have at home (sketchbook, pencils, markers, watercolors, paper, scissors, glue), with advance notice for any specialty items. Affordable recommendations and shopping links are provided whenever possible. We also encourage a "Beautiful Junk Box" of collected collage treasures β€” free creativity!
Are the classes live?
It's a mix. Each month includes two professionally filmed Studio Exploration Projects your family can watch anytime, plus two LIVE "In the Studio with Kristin" sessions β€” relaxed, community-centered gatherings with creativity games, mini demonstrations, questions and artwork celebrations. Live times vary to accommodate different schedules.
What if we miss a live session?
No problem! Every live session is recorded and added to the Academy as a replay, so your family can watch (and create along) whenever it fits your schedule.
How involved do parents need to be?
KCCA is designed to encourage increasing creative independence. Younger artists may need occasional help gathering materials or setting up, while older children may work almost entirely independently. Parents are encouraged to be interested observers and creative cheerleaders β€” not assistant art directors. And each month's Parent Connection Letter gives you conversation starters and encouraging language to use at home. You don't need to know anything about art to raise a creative kid.

Let's raise creative thinkers.

Art is what we use. Creativity is what we're building. I'd love for your family to create with us.
